Let's get things started!

First things first I suppose, hello all. This is my very first blog and to say I'm a newbie would be an understatement. So here's a little bit about me.

I love to write, read, cook, and DIY. I live in small town, middle of nowhere. More about that later. I am married with two beautiful babies and live on a ranch/farm.

I have a million projects around the house that need to be done. Our house is a 1970's trailer house, although my husband insists that it is a 'modular' home. It is not the house we will be in forever, but for now it is home, so I make do with what I have on a very tight budget. I am not an experienced DIYer, it took me a day and a half to get a basic shelf hung in my bathroom, but I enjoy it.

I also find myself talking to my imaginary audience as I prepare meals after watching cooking shows. Come on, you've done it to.

I am passionate about cooking, although given the girls being nearly three years old and six months, I find it increasingly difficult to get the time in the kitchen the way I would like.

I have been following a handful of blogs for awhile now, and here's what I have taken from them.

1. Blogging is a great resource for getting information out and getting feedback from readers.
2. Blogging is incredibly public and that terrifies me.
3. Blogging can be slightly narcissistic (yes I had to look that up in the dictionary).
4. Blogging holds one accountable.

So here's why I've decided to go for it, given the good and bad. Your phone rings, its your mother, neighbor, friend, insert name here____, and they are going to drop by and visit. You rapidly start throwing toys in bins, taking full arm swoops off the counters and shoving them in drawers. You hastily sweep crumbs off the floor, at least the big pieces that people can see, the rest you sweep under the cabinets for now. You grab the towering pile of mail and push that in a closet too and pray you won't have to open it while your guest is there. You glance at the clock and realize you have five minutes till they arrive and rush to the bathroom, pulling your hair up and putting on mascara. You run back into the front entrance and light a candle to disguise the poopy diapers, muddy shoes, etc, smell. Then you take a deep breath and smile as you open the door for your guests.

Ok, tell me that I'm not the only one who does this? Assuming your still reading, I guess I'm not the only one. Well that feeling of accountability is why I am doing this. I will post my DIY triumphs and failures. My cooking adventures and disasters. It will take me time to figure out all the ins and outs of blogging and to be quite honest, I am not very technelogically advanced.

The next step will be learning how to put up pictures and other fun stuff. Thank you for taking your time to check out my blog. Stop by again soon and see what I've been working on. Feel free to leave a little advice for a newbie like me or share any of your own blog ups and downs!

Changes

I was cleaning today, which gave me time to think, and thinking always leads me here. The house is 'weekend messy', so decided to clean my floors, because The Nester says if your floors are clean the rest of the house feels clean too, even if it isn’t.  I have found that it is pretty good advice, so when everything else feels chaotic, I clean the floors. Of course for me, cleaning the floors also means picking up the toys, shoes, clothes, etc. so that I can even begin to vacuum, which naturally leads to a cleaner home as well.  While cleaning up I began to think about how this blog has evolved over the years, from a desire to write like The Nester about home, into what it is now.  I started writing this blog when I was dreaming of building a new home. Then plans changed, life took turns, and we ended up in a home so different than I expected and so perfect for our family. Somewhere along the way I realized that home wasn’t in the walls that went up or in the co

From My Christmas Wish List to Yours!

One of my favorite stores, West Elm, has now opened a special section called The Market. It specializes in kitchen, garden and personal care. Lets just say I am in love. If I had unlimited resources to spend in one store to do a total overhaul on my house, it would be West Elm, and now with the new Market, I am in lust too. So here are a few of my favorites. Check it out and maybe you'll get some great Christmas ideas for someone on your list. Or maybe my hubby will see this and get a great idea for me! Hint, hint! Enjoy! Incredibly large, amazing cutting board . I've seen these boards doubling as art hanging on the wall, then they take up no storage space! Cast iron Dutch oven . Great for one-pot meals. These glass jars come in varying sizes. I'm thinking they would work well for brown sugar with that rubber seal. I would definitely get plenty of use out of a cheese knife set during the holidays and all year round. Copper measuring spoons . Seriously? Fantastic

Happiness

I am a New Years girl. I love goals and check lists and I love the feeling of a fresh start, but resolutions have never been my thing. A few year ago I began picking a word for the year and I found that it works really well for me.  Setting a word for the year has helped me to focus on a quality that I want to grow in myself. Last years word was ‘ intentional ’. It was a full year and in a lot of ways a really hard year. Being intentional with my words, thoughts and actions helped me to really lean into the relationships in my life. The past year felt somber though. It was good and I grew more than I could have imagined, but it also felt serious and deep. I need some relief. This year after praying over it and considering what I would like more of in the coming year, I knew that my word for 2019 had to be 'happiness'. I want more laughter, more spontaneity, more fun in 2019 and none of those things come naturally to me. I thought about words like joy and contentment b
